The Healing Power of Meditation: Bee Breathing, Om Humming, and Mantras
I have been reminded lately of the power of meditation as a daily practice. Stress is such a big part of everyday life, and often we do not even realize how much it is affecting us. Meditation has been practiced for thousands of years across many cultures and traditions. It is not tied to any one spirituality or practice and can be used by anybody.
Why Meditation Matters
Meditation is more than just sitting quietly. It is a practice of training the mind to become present and aware. Research has shown that regular meditation may help:
Reduce stress and anxiety
Lower blood pressure
Improve emotional balance
Increase concentration and memory
Support better sleep
Promote feelings of peace and well-being
Even a few minutes a day can make a noticeable difference.
There are a few specific practices that I enjoy, including Bee Breathing, Om Humming, and using mantras.
Bee Breathing
Bee breathing, also known as Bhramari Pranayama, is a yogic breathing technique that creates a soft humming sound similar to the buzz of a bee.
The practice is simple:
Sit comfortably and close your eyes.
Take a deep breath in through the nose.
As you slowly exhale, make a gentle zzzzz sound.
Focus on the vibration created in the head and chest.
The vibration from the zzzzz’s can help quiet the mind and even calm the nervous system. It can be used to reduce tension, anger, frustration, and mental fatigue. I also find that for me, it improves my mood and just leaves me with a general sense of wellbeing.
The Power of Om Humming
The sound “Om” (or “Aum”) is sacred in many spiritual traditions. It is believed to represent the vibration of the universe and the connection between mind, body, and spirit.
When chanting Om, the body produces vibrations that can stimulate relaxation and mindfulness. The sound is usually broken into three parts:
“Aaa” — felt in the abdomen
“Ooo” — felt in the chest
“Mmm” — felt in the head
This combination, particularly if you are able to focus on your body as you hum, is incredibly peaceful and always reminds me of just how connected everything is. We are all part of the vibration of the universe.
Mantras and Mental Clarity
A mantra is a word, phrase, or sound repeated during meditation. Mantras help focus the mind on a single thought or sound and thereby reduce distractions. Repetition is soothing and can help grow a specific intent. Mantras can be tailored to your needs and desires. They can be words in any language that resonates for you and any complexity that works for you. I find that they are best for me when they are short and easily repeatable.
“So Hum”
This ancient Sanskrit mantra means “I am that” or “I am connected to the universe.”
A common practice is:
Inhale silently thinking “So”
Exhale silently thinking “Hum”
“Om Shreem Shri Lakshmi Bhyo Namaha”
The sacred sound “Shreem” is believed to carry the vibration of abundance, beauty, and compassion. Lakshmi is a Hindu goddess of fertility, beauty, and auspiciousness. I find it to be a mantra that is joyful and empowering.
“I Am Calm”
Simple English affirmations can be just as powerful as any other language. Repeating “I am calm”, or “I am at peace”, or even just “I am” helps redirect the mind away from stress and worry.
Bringing Meditation Into Daily Life
Try this simple routine:
1 minute of deep breathing- try 4 beats in through your nose, hold for 4 beats, 4 beats softly exhaling through your mouth.
3 minutes of bee breathing or om humming
1 minute repeating a calming mantra silently
Consistency matters more than perfection.
Final Thoughts
Meditation is a simple yet powerful practice that can have a profound effect on well-being. It is free, accessible and enjoyable. If you have never done it, I hope you will give it a try!
